Choosing the Best domain Name for Your Brand. This or That?

“I have a company now. What’s next?” Choosing your brand’s domain is not as easy as it sounds. You need to consider so many aspects of your company’s branding, so you need to be really thorough in choosing one. It can be difficult to change your domain name later on without harming your brand or search engine results if you choose the wrong one at first.

In today’s topic, we’re going to discover which domain name suits your brand best; .com, .com.my, or .my?

#1 Rule: Name Availability

Thousands of brand-new domain names are registered every day from all around the world. Therefore, checking to see if the name you want is still available is the first step in choosing a domain name.

You should focus your attention on your brand name rather than the extension of your domain. Your name is far more significant than the extension. If www.yourbrand.com.my is the only domain name available, you should secure it while it is still available.

Remember to name your website as simply and easily as you can, as it may affect your SEO and your company’s image too.

#2 Rule: Target Market

“What if the domain name is available in all extensions?” Let’s walk through the differences between all those three domain names first.

As the name implies, a .my or .com.my domain extension signifies that a website or business is based in Malaysia, whereas a .com suggests that the business is based globally. Typically .com is a universal extension, therefore there is a higher probability that a foreign company with the same name as yours registered for the domain name before you. It is essential to conduct thorough research before making a decision because there is a smaller chance of running into a local business with the same name using the .my domain extension.

Your domain name shall depend on your target market. If you intend to grow your business locally, then you should go for .my or .com.my and vice versa.

#3 Rule: The Shorter, The Better

Now that you understand the differences between those domain names, you might wonder what makes .com.my any different from .my, right?

In Malaysia, the unique online brand identity is provided by the Malaysia Network Information Centre (MYNIC) to all organisations and individuals. MYNIC is an agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) that registers .my domain names that represent a company.

The only thing that differs .com.my and .my is the time stamp. Initially, MYNIC only offered .com.my for registered companies. They then introduced .my that can be registered by any figure regardless of their company’s registration status. However, .my often chosen by people since it’s short and easy for people to remember.
