Deforestation, car fumes and the burning of fossil fuels may contribute to world pollution. But, did you know what else does? Emails.
Yup, you heard it right the first time. Junk emails, unread emails and all unwanted emails can cause carbon emissions. There are already a bunch of studies that prove emails are polluting the earth.
Bear in mind! In order to keep emails, multiple servers are needed. They usually store them in big data centers that require huge amounts of electricity every single day. For those who don’t know, most electricity is still generated from fossil fuels which can result in global carbon emissions (CO2e). Simply put, spam email uses around 33 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in total. Research shows one spam email is equivalent to 0.3g of CO2e while one standard email carries 4g of CO2e. If one working person receives at least 100 emails per day, imagine the total of emails received worldwide? A study found at least 293.6 billion emails are sent daily, or nearly 107 billion spam emails in a single day. Can you guess how much carbon is emitted? Horrific.
Fun theory made by Orange, if everyone in France deleted just 50 emails, enough electricity could be saved to illuminate the Eiffel Tower for another 42 years. That sounds super easy yet quite hard.
Why do we need to join hands and save the planet?
Two is always better than one. We firmly believe you’ve heard enough about how ill our planet is right now. It’s time to take action for the sake of our planet and our next generation.
Until 2016, the total carbon footprint released in China was 10 billion tonnes of CO2e, topping every other country with a 29.18% share of the world while the United States let out 5 billion tonnes of CO2e that year and took 14.02% of the world’s record.
In general, we collectively emit 50 billion tonnes of CO2e every year. Quite a big number, no? This cannot be happening for long. Actions really need to be taken to save the earth from dying.
Let’s start with the small one; emails…
What can we do to help?
Easy. Trash they go… Because storing 1 GB of emails or 1,000 emails takes 32 kWh, creating 55.2 million kWh. If everyone on the planet erased 10 emails (spam or non spam), that would be enough to delete 1,725,000 GB.
With just deleting emails, everyone can now be Superman! Great! Or, even better, unsubscribe from unwanted emails and never sign up for newsletters you’re not interested in reading.
